Matching Your Bag with Your Shoes

Matching your bag with your shoes was once a fashion faux pas, but now it is back as a hot new trend.

The “art” of coordinating an outfit or matching one’s accessories is referred to as “matching-up”.  Not a fashionable word or even vaguely academic, but it pretty much sums up the notion of those who conform to matching their bag with their shoes.

For many years, if you dared to be so conservative as to co-ordinate your accessories, let alone your color schemes, you were met with funny glances and much disdain.  But not anymore!

One of the most dramatic fashion about-turns in recent seasons is the trend of coordinating accessories, and in particular, shoes and handbags.  Fashion minded women like to match their shoes, bags and accessories as it not only finishes off an outfit, it looks more polished and complete.

Woman’s Prerogative.

If we all agree that it’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind, then we can agree why fashion gets away with being so fickle. Therefore, it will come as no surprise that one of the most dramatic fashion about-turns in recent seasons is the trend of coordinating accessories. During recent fashion shows, many designers have sent models down the runway in head-to-toe coordinated looks — with handbags, shoes and outfits and even matching fabrics thus highlighting the trend.

For many of us, style is all about coordinating or matching color and texture with accessories.  For example, if you wear black shoes, select a black bag and belt, and perhaps even glasses with black frames, gloves, necklaces and bracelets.  When it comes to textures, match patent leather with patent leather, mock croc with mock croc, saffiano leather with saffiano, pony hair with pony hair.

Build a Collection of Classic Basics and You’ll get a lot More Bang for Your Buck.

Take your match-up one step further.  Make sure the hardware such as buttons, buckles and studs — on garments and accessories match as well. If you’re a silver person, opt for silver, steel or platinum finishes.  Avoid wearing a gold watch with silver jewelry, or brass belt buckles with a jacket with silver buttons.

It goes without saying that most of us can’t afford the luxury of a wardrobe full of matching or coordinating accessories. Not just financially, but the space required to house such a collection.

So, the smart money says that every woman needs to build a collection of classic basics, that way you’ll get more bang for your buck. Then rock-out a fashion statement accessory or two.
